Spring Sweat: Week Two Review

Hello again all! I hope you are all having a wonderful week so far. I have my second week of Spring Sweat classes and Lululemon review for you all today. I am really enjoying testing out new studios and ways to sweat all over Dallas! I am also loving what this experience is doing for my health. I am starting to notice a real change in energy and muscle tone in my body after my second week of classes. Seeing this really reassures me that I am on the right path, and motivates me to keep going. I hope to see you all at a class with me soon!!!

Date: Monday, March 23rd

Thoughts: I enjoyed my first barre class here at The Barre Code Highland Park so much that I decided to give it another go. During my first class, the awesome instructor Liz was on vacation, so this was my first time with her. I really enjoyed the energy and difficulty she brought to the class! She was very positive and upbeat, and worked hard showing us each and every move leading by example. She also went around frequently to check our form and make sure we were doing each exercise correctly. For our prop this class, we used a stability disc to increase difficulty in our floor core workouts, as well as a balancing tool during our barre work. It also acted as a weight during our arm exercises. This turned out to be a very challenging class! The core work especially was difficult for me because of the way we incorporated the stability disc. When Liz was showing us the exercises they seemed simple enough, but looks can be deceiving! One glance around the room and you could tell it was challenging for all of us, however, so I did not feel ashamed or out of place. Liz just encouraged us that if we fall out of the exercise, to jump right back in. She was a great cheerleader for us all!  My Lululemon Mesh With Me Tank and If Your Lucky Pant was the perfect outfit for this class. I love wearing those pants to barre classes because they have a slight dancer-flare to them that I appreciate. Also, wearing this form-fitting tank and pant combination allows me to get a really good look at my body in the studio mirrors so I know that I am performing the exercises correctly. These are without a doubt my go-to barre class pieces.

Date: Tuesday, March 24th

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: Classic Pilates

Class: Vbarre

Instructor: Joann Cuccurullo

About: This is a non-stop, form focused and results driven barre class. Concentrating on fat burning and lengthening muscles, this ballet inspired workout will trim, tone, and transform your body. Weights, resistance bands, balls, and glide boards are used in this dynamic class.

Pants: Lululemon "Skinny Will Pant" *Full On Luon HERE

Thoughts: I went into this class thinking it would be more Pilates then barre, but it seemed to be the other way around. I think that was maybe a good thing though, because the Pilates equipment is very intimidating!  We used several props to target different body areas during our exercises. We started with a resistance band, focusing on our arms. We then progressed to a glide board, which I had never worked with before. Even though it was challenging, this was my favorite part! At one point we were “skating” back and forth across the board in our socks and it was so much fun! It was great to let off some steam while working up a sweat. After the glide board, we moved on to exercises on the barre with a ball, and finally finished with floor work and stretching. This barre class definitely felt the most ballet-inspired of all the barre classes I have taken thus far. In fact, one of the instructors in the studio is a former professional dancer.  I loved this aspect of the class because I was a dancer all my life, even through college, so that really took me back to my younger days. To this class I sported my Lululemon Bonded Bra and my Lululemon Skinny Will Pant. I enjoyed the look of this outfit, however I think that the Skinny Will Pant works much better in a yoga setting then a barre class. Because they are a bit loose on the bottom, I wanted to pull them up and create a make-shift capri all class! If you are a dancer, you know what I am talking about. It’s kind of a dancer’s signature look to have pulled up pants, particularly one leg, don’t ask me why! The bra, however, was great! Like I have said before, it is more of a short top then a bra, so I love it mixed with high waisted pants. It gives the perfect amount of coverage and support, while showing enough skin to cool you off through the duration of you workout.  I really liked this class and am already planning on taking it again next week. The studio is so close to my office, it is nice to be able to walk there straight after work. I really enjoyed working with Joann, who owns the studio, however this week it is taught by Veronica, so I am excited to work with someone new as well. Different instructors generally mean different workouts all together, so I like to spice things up!

Date: Wednesday, March 25th

Time: 7:45 p.m.

Location: Gaia Flow Yoga - Dallas Uptown

Class: Late Gentle Waves

Instructor: Nelly Perumean

About: Gental waves is a slow moving, healing and meditative experience focused on balance. The exercises are meant to clear the mind, calm the body, and sooth the spirit.

What Meggie Wore:
Top: Lululemon "All Sport Bra" HERE
Pants: Lululemon "Skinny Will Pant" *Full On Luon HERE

Thoughts: I chose this class knowing my other classes last week were going to be intense. I was hoping this would be a nice, soothing class to stretch out my sore muscles and it did not disappoint! I was unaware when signing up, but this class was also a hot yoga experience. I have grown to really enjoy that aspect of the yoga classes I have taken, because I can appreciate clearing the toxins from my skin and body as I balance and meditate as well as clear the toxins from my mind and soul. I loved the slowed down pace of this class and the focus on meditation. Our instructor Nelly was amazing and really helped us all let go of the stress of the day and focus on our bodies. I enjoy yoga more and more for not only its exercise, but for its therapeutic properties as well. This was by far the most meditative yoga class I have taken thus far, and I really respected that aspect of it. Besides meditation, we focused a lot on balancing poses for longer periods of times, and gentle intermediate movements. Please don’t judge me, but I wore my Lululemon Skinny Will Pant for the second day in a row. I just love the feel of the Full On Luon fabric and it really helped to add to my relaxation during my yoga class. The fabric is also nice and stretchy, making it perfect for more challenging poses. I also sported my Lululemon All Sport Bra, which helped hold the girls in while I flowed into each movement. This spiritual yoga experience ended with a short stress relieving aromatherapy massage that kept me calm and centered for the rest of the night. It was the perfect way to refresh my body mid-week. Nelly is going to be in Mexico for the next two weeks, so I am anxious for her return so I can attend this class with her again.

Date: Thursday, March 26th

Time: 6:15 p.m.

Location: BEYOND Pedaling

Class: Cycling45

Instructor: Kelsey Howard

About: this is the signature class of BEYOND Pedaling. It is a fast-paced full body workout that is designed to change you inside and out. The motivational instruction, upbeat music, and candlelit room will leave you feeling energized, focused, empowered, and ready to go beyond!

What Meggie Wore:
Top: Lululemon "Just Breathe Tank" in alberta lake/split pea c/o HERE
Pants: Lululemon "High Times Pant" in black/black HERE

Thoughts: Oh boy, was this class a challenge! I have never before taken a spinning class, so I was expecting it to be difficult, but this one literally kicked my butt! Although my Lululemon High Times pants were great at wicking sweat and nicely compressed my muscles while I worked them, I was bruised from the bicycle seat for about four days after this class. I definitely recommend wearing special padded cycling shorts or pants if you are new to spinning like I am. Believe me, your butt will thank you! The instructor, Kelsey, was full of life! I loved how into the moves and the music she was, because it took my concentration off of how badly my thighs were aching! She was constantly dancing to the beat and performed every exercise with us, encouraging us to push it to ourselves to our limits. I really appreciate when instructors lead by example, because then I feel like I know the correct form and speed of each exercise much better than if they were just calling it out. This class incorporated different moves on the stationary bike, inclines, and weights to work our arms as well. When you think of spinning, it tends to be more of a cardio and leg workout, so I loved how using the weights transformed it into a total body experience. The music was loud and fun, and the whole class was done in candlelight. I was thanking my lucky stars it was only 45 minutes, because I’m pretty sure I would have passed out from exhaustion if it lasted one second longer! Besides my trusty High Times Pant, I also sported my Lululemon Just Breath Tank. I loved this top for cycling because it was not clingy on my mid-section, which is nice when you are seated during the exercises. It also kept me cool during my workout and allowed me to move my arms freely during the weighted exercises. I am eager to try out this class again, especially because my friend Katie from the Northpark Lululemon is also an instructor at BEYOND. I am hoping to take her class ASAP!!

Casual Strolls In Lulu

Hello again and happy Friday! I just have a little outfit post for you all today. After taking photos in the park for Tuesday's post the Hubs and I strolled around a little bit. The weather and scenery were just too perfect, so we had to take advantage of it before we are stuck in the heat of a Texas summer. I threw on this comfortable and light weight Lululemon jacket that my sweet mother-in-law passed down to me. It was the ideal jacket for a casual spring stroll. It just goes to show that Lululemon isn't just for  intense exercising. There versatile clothing can be the perfect thing for a casual day, and way cuter then sweatpants. I hope you enjoy this outfit!

Tasty Thursday: Oven Roasted Butternut Squash

Hello again all! The weekend is almost here (thank goodness) and I am so ready for it! I wanted to share with you today a simple side dish recipe, oven roasted butternut squash. I was inspired to make this after having some at our friends Blake and Lindsey's house. I could not get over how delicious it was! I have never before tried to cook this squash any other way than a creamy butternut squash soup. Even though I LOVE butternut squash soup, I perfer it prepared like this! When this squash is roasted, you can really taste the butter and nut flavors, much more so than in a soup. It has a natural sweetness about itand caramelizes when roasted, making it the perfect side for fish or pork entrees especially. I pretty much cook all my vegetables this way now. They retain much more of their nutrients and develop a fabulous roasted taste. I hope you enjoy this dish!

Oven Roasted Butternut Squash

  •  1 butternut squash, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil or grape seed oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Toss your cubed squash with the oil, salt, and pepper and arrange on a baking sheet. Bake for about 20- 30 minutes stirring halfway through, or until the squash is tender and slightly browned. Remove from the oven and carefully scoop onto a serving plate, the squash can easily stick to the baking sheet. Serve and enjoy!

Spring Sweat: Week One Review

Hello again my lovely followers! I hope you are all doing well, I know Mondays can be difficult for us all. I wanted to do a little recap on my Summer Sweat progress. Now that I have taken a few classes with my Classpass membership, I have so much to share with you about my workout experience so far! I stuck to barre and yoga style classes for my first week. I had never before done a barre class, however I did dance for many years so I felt a level of comfort in trying this new style. I also have taken a few yoga classes before, so I was not a total beginner. Keeping that in mind, here are my thoughts and more about each specific class.

Date: Monday, March 16th

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Location: The Barre Code Highland Park

Class: Barre Code

Instructor: Kayln Potter

About: This signature workout is a 50 minute full body workout, targeting the arms, abdominals, thighs, and glutes and includes intermittent cardio activity. Each class also incorporates different props and equipment. Alternating between isometric holds, heavy repetition, and deep stretching, this class is geared toward working your muscles to fatigue to develop musle stamina and endurance over time.

What Meggie Wore:

Pants: Lululemon "If You're Lucky Pant" c/o HERE

Thoughts: This Barre Code class was my first ever barre class, so I was unsure what to expect. I knew that barre itself was a ballet-inspired aerobics class, but I had no idea that it would incorporate so much strength training and, really, push me beyond my limits. For this class, our accessory was a 5lb kettle bell that we incorporated into almost every exercise we performed. The class was comprised of a mixture of floor work with both body weight and kettle bell exercises, as well as bar work. We were moving non-stop! Our instructor Kayln was very encouraging, pushing us beyond what we thought we could do. She not only demonstrated each exercise, but she also went around the room correcting our posture so that our muscles got the most out of each position. I definitely worked up a sweat in this class, and feel like I burned some serious calories! I wore my Lululemon “Bonded Bra” top and “If You’re Lucky” pant and they both served me well. The top, which is longer, almost like a bralette or a short tank top, held my girls in while allowing me to move freely. It also wicked away sweat as I was working my body as hard as I could push it! The pants are high waisted, which I love! They kept my abs, butt, and thighs nice and tight through each exercise. The pants also have a beautiful breathable mesh on the calves that kept me cool and fashionable throughout my barre class. I would highly recommend this class, as well as this studio in general. In fact, I took the same class yesterday and I will tell you all about it in next week’s review!

Date:  Tuesday, March 17th
Time: 8:30 p.m.

Location: CorePower Yoga Mockingbird Station

Class: Hot Power Fusion - Candlelight

Instructor: Susie H Hughes

About: Hot Power Fusion blends CorePower's detoxifying qualities of the Hot Yoga and intensity of the Power Yoga classes. This candlelight class is practiced in a heated, climate controlled environment set to appeal to all those in favor of a healthy sweat. This class focuses primarily on opening up the shoulders, hips, and spine as well as building upper arm strength and practicing meditation.

What Meggie Wore:

Thoughts: Hot Power Fusion Candlelight Yoga was my next adventure for the week. Sweet Julianne from the Northpark Lululemon joined me as well on my yoga journey. I chose this class because I was feeling a bit sore from my barre class and I was hoping to do a good amount of stretching to ease my muscle pain. I was a little disappointed to find that this class focused more on balancing then stretching, but I do think I got a better workout then originally anticipated. I have taken a few yoga classes before, but this was my first time taking hot yoga, and boy did I SWEAT! It was a much different challenge then barre class, as well as previous yoga classes I have attended. Susie instructed us to lace together different poses, holding each for a significant period of time. The transitions were slow and powerful, and I found it to be an extremely meditative experience as a whole. The most challenging part for me was figuring out what pose was next. Because I am still a yoga beginner, when Susie was calling out the name of the next pose, I did not always know what she was referring to. She was traveling around the room correcting our posture, so I could not refer to her for an example of the correct transitions or poses. Luckily, I was able to look around at my classmates and figure it out fairly quickly. At the cool down, we focused on being grateful. Susie asked us to write down each night three things we are grateful for and to concentrate on that graciousness throughout our day. That message was powerful to me, and made me think of this class as not only an exercise, but also a therapy experience. For this class, I wore my “Just Breathe Tank” top and my “High Times” pant. The light straps and support of the top were perfect for this class. I also loved that it was loose fitting and not clinging to my stomach, because that can be uncomfortable when you were sweating as much as I was! I also loved the pants. Again, the high rise kept my core tight, while the lightweight fabric wicked away sweat throughout the class. This session was the perfect class to take when you are just getting back into a workout routine. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a more low-intensity workout, and cleansing experience.

Date: Wednesday, March 18th
Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: CorePower Yoga Mockingbird Station

Class: CorePower Yoga 2 - Heated Power Yoga

Instructor: Catrina

About: CorePower Yoga 2 (C2) is a energizing and rigorous yoga class with demanding strength poses that will have you moving, breathing, and sweating. This heated climate controlled class focuses on building and engaging your core to strengthen and support you in more advanced poses.

What Meggie Wore:

Pants: Lululemon "If You're Lucky Pant" c/o HERE

Thoughts: My friend Jen, also from the Northpark Lululemon, suggested this class last week. When I compare the two yoga classes, I preferred this one! It was much more fast paced, and consisted of quick transitions other than balancing poses. I felt the burn in my core and absolutely got a little cardio push swiftly switching poses. Catrina was a lovely instructor, encouraging us to smile and not take class, or life, so seriously. She was really great at instructing each pose and showing examples of the transitions before we attempted them. She also gave us beginner, intermediate, and advanced options for almost every pose to appeal to all levels of yogis. I, once again, worked up a serious sweat in this class! Hot yoga is no joke when it comes to releasing toxins!  I sported my Lululemon “Mesh With Me tank” top and “If You’re Lucky” pant and I loved the result. With white mesh on top, black mesh on bottom, a snakeskin print on my tank and a heathered gray fabric on my pants, the combination made for a very stylish yoga outfit, if I do say so myself! The mesh fabrics were perfect for keeping areas of my body covered, but cool and the performance fabrics of the top and pants are amazing at keeping me as comfortable as possible exercising in a hot and humid room. The top has a very supportive built in bra, that comes with removable cups. I love built in bras because that is one less layer I have to sweat through! All in all, I look forward to taking this class again in the near future.

Date: Thursday, March 19th
Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: Exhale Spa Dallas

Class: Core Barre Fusion

Instructor: Kristen Hoffman

About: Exhale's signature full body barre workout designed to give you chiseled abs, toned legs, cut arms, and a lifted butt. This core-centric class focuses on isolated exercises, alignment, flexibility, and posture as you work targeted muscles to the limit.

What Meggie Wore:
Top: Lululemon "Bonded Bra" in black c/o HERE similar HERE
Pants: Lululemon "High Times Pant" in black/black HERE

Thoughts: This barre class really kicked my butt, quite literally! I have never worked my glutes so hard and they were sore all weekend after this Thursday class! Kristen was super sweet but was not fooling around and we started off with a bang. She was encouraging and guided us through every, grueling motion and did a great job leading by example as well as coming around and adjusting our form. This class was very fast paced and focused on different muscle groups at a time, working each to exhaustion before moving on to the next one. We used different free weights and resistance bands to increase the intensity, and did a combination of floor and barre work. This was the most challenging class of the week for me. It was hard to push myself to finish each interval, but Kristen was very encouraging and kept convincing us "you can do anything for ten seconds, it won't kill you!" It almost did though, it almost did kill me! Through this intense workout, I am glad I had my Lululemon "Bonded Bra" top and my "High Times" pants because they kept my muscles in a nice compression as I pushed them to their limit. Plus, I love a good "all black everythang" ensemble as much as the next girl! Besides the workout, I really loved Exhale as a facility. The room was really nice, and they offer not only barre classes, but yoga, cardio, and an immense selection of spa services! I am planning on attending this class again, as well as trying out some of their other options. I would recommend this class to anyone who is up for a real challenge, and is looking for an intense workout. I know this class will whip me into shape by summer!

With all of this, I wanted to share with you one of my outfits as well as a few of the yoga poses and simple workouts I have learned in my recent classes.  These are just some poses I now do around the house to center myself, and some body weight exercises that are great to do at home.

 Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

At my Wednesday class, my teacher had me do this pose. Catrina told us in the beginning that we would do variations on traditional poses. I could not find a proper name for this one, however it was my favorite. It seems to be a combination of Tree Pose (Vrksasana) and Prayer Twist (Parvritta Utkatasana).

Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana)

 Pigeon Pose (Kapotasana)

 Side Plank Pose (Vasisthasana)

 WarriorPose 2 (Virabhdrasana II)

And here are just some easy body weight exercises I do at home, as well as in the barre classes.

Pushups: For arms, pecs, and core

Bicycles: For upper and lower abs, and obliques

Vertical Leg Crunch : For lower abs

 Forearm Plank: For core muscles

Recipe Monday: Shredded BBQ Pork

Hello again all! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I am so sorry because know I promised that this recipe post would be up on Friday, but sometimes life happens! Better late than never though, so here is the BBQ pulled pork recipe that I made to accompany the coleslaw recipe I posted on Thursday. I am always searching for new crockpot recipes because I find it so nice to come home from work and have dinner already prepared. The only issue I have is it forces me to get up a little earlier in the a.m. and I am not what you would call a “morning person.” I have found it to be a good trade off however, being that I have more time to spend with the Hubs after work if dinner is hot and ready to serve. I had bought a bottle of Walden Farms Sugar Free BBQ sauce a while back, because I know it would be a good South Beach Diet option. With summer just around the corner, I decided it would be a good time to prepare a healthy low carb meal, that wasn’t just another salad. I was inspired by a recipe from Red Head Can Decorate that I found on Pinterest. I decided to keep the meal low in carbs, that I would serve it overtop of coleslaw (recipe HERE). It was so simple to make and definitely something that will become a go-to recipe at our house. I hope you try it for yourself!

Shredded BBQ Pork in the Slow Cooker

  • 2-3 pound pork loin
  • 3 heads of garlic, minced
  • 2 bottles of your favorite BBQ Sauce (1 for cooking, 1 for serving)
  •  1 can of dark soda (I used Dr. Zevia)
  • 1 tablespoon of Siracha Hot Sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • avocado for serving

Salt and pepper each side of your meat and place your pork, fat side up, into the slow cooker. Mince your garlic and place it overtop of your pork. Gently whisk together one bottle of BBQ sauce, the cola, and the hot sauce. Pour overtop of the pork. Cover your slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours. Once cooking is complete, gently remove the layer of fat and discard. Shred your meat in the leftover juices (my leftover liquid was quite runny). Remove your meat from the crockpot. Coat your meat with however much of your additional bottle of BBQ sauce as you desire. Serve on buns or overtop of coleslaw. Top with avocado and enjoy!

Tasty Thursday: Simple Coleslaw

Hello again lovelies! Along with my Spring Sweat challenging workouts, I have decided to eat as healthy as possible also. I want to boost my results, so eating right and exercising is the best way to do it! I have been cutting out most carbs, with the exceptions of fruits, sweet potatoes, and small amounts of red wine. I was getting a little tired of salads all day every day, so I decided to switch it up a little. I wanted to make some pulled pork in the crock pot (recipe to come tomorrow) but I did not want the bread. I resolved instead to serve it over a bed of coleslaw. Cabbage is high in vitamin K and I do not eat it as often as I should, but I enjoy it in coleslaw. I wanted to make a slightly healthier version, so mine has grape seed oil instead of canola, light mayonnaise, and mustard. I hope you enjoy this simple, low carb side!

Simple Coleslaw

  • 1 small head of green cabbage, shreaded
  • 3 heads of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup light mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup of mustard
  • 2 tablespoons of grape seed oil
  • 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar or 2 teaspoons of stevia
  • salt and pepper to taste

Shred cabbage into a large bowl. In a smaller bowl, whisk together garlic, mayo, mustard, oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. Pour dressing over your shredded cabbage. Toss to combine. Refrigerate for a few hours. Serve and enjoy!

Recipe Wednesday: Flour-less Egg Muffins

Hello again all! I hope you are having a great week so far. I am so excited about the clocks finally changing. I was a little bummed about missing an hour of sleep Saturday night, but I love that it is still light out when I get home from work. It just makes me feel like I still have a little bit of daytime left even after a long work day, which is so nice. Also, the weather is getting so much better! No more snow in Dallas this year PLEASE! All I want is for spring to arrive so I can stop bundling up every time I go outside. I desperately want to get back into taking walks and jogs around the neighborhood, and the combo of nicer weather and extra daylight after work is definitely making that possible. As of late I have been trying to eat even healthier. I have put myself back on the South Beach Diet and have been Phase One all week long. Because of that, I have a few new healthy and low carb recipes to share with you all in the next couple of days. My first one is a breakfast recipe. I don't usually go outside the typical bacon and eggs,  breakfast smoothies, or grabbing a breakfast sandwich on the go when it comes to the most important meal of the day. For some reason, I just don't test out new breakfast recipes often. However, because I am NOT a morning person, this flour-less egg muffin recipe from Kalyn at Kayln's Kitchen perked my interests because it is a Phase One compatible make-ahead meal. I have to say, the Hubs and I ate these muffins all week and they were delicious! They were also so simple to make. This is quickly going to become a staple breakfast in our household. I made mine with cooked chicken breakfast sausage, green onions, and white cheddar cheese, but you can really fill them with whatever you like. I hope you get creative and enjoy this simple breakfast!

Flour-less Egg Muffins

  • 12 eggs
  • 1 cup of finely grated white cheddar cheese
  • 3 green onions, diced
  • 6 small breakfast sausage links, diced (I used Applegate chicken sausage with sage)
  • 1 teaspoon of Sriracha hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
  • grape seed oil to grease the pan

Preheat your oven to 375 degrease. Pour a little grape seed oil onto a paper towel and grease your muffin tin (silicone cups or a silicone muffin pan is preferred, but I used a metal one and it worked fine). Cook your sausage according to packaged directions and set aside allowing them to cool.  Grate your cheese and chop your green onions. Chop your cooled sausages into half inch pieces. Fill each muffin tin about half way with the sausages, cheese, and diced green onions. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Pour the egg mixture into the muffin tin, filling each cup about 3/4 of the way. Mix each cup a little with a fork to evenly combine all the ingredients. Put your muffins into the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until they become slightly brown on top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Once cooled, store in the refrigerator. In the morning, remove a muffin and microwave for 45 seconds. Eat and enjoy your grab and go breakfast!
